The Alpine Classic crew are putting the finishing touches on preparations for this year’s event up at Falls Creek. If you’re not familiar with the event, it’s a long distance, climb-focussed tarmac ride with a long history dating back to 1986, when it was conceived by a group of Audax cyclists who rode Bright to Falls Creek and back, then decided they wanted more. So they rode up Mount Buffalo for 200km total … and the original Alpine Classic route was born. The modern Classic 200km route is Bright > Mount Buffalo > Tawonga Gap > Falls Creek > Tawonga Gap > Bright and is a real test of your mettle.
Now in its 35th year the event has grown into 8 different courses, including the 60km Mount Beauty ride (Tawonga Gap up and back) and the 200km Classic, right up to the 320km Ultimate which knocks off four of the 7 Peaks climbs in a single day. Something to note: at this stage Sunday’s weather forecast is clear … but hot. 40 degree hot. Given the terrain and variation in temperatures/conditions in the Victorian High Country, every opportunity will be given for forecast accuracy to be refined. Therefore, any decisions regarding Sunday’s event and extreme heat will be advised by the event organisers in line with their extreme weather policy on Saturday 23rd Jan @ 11am.
