I am 55 and have been cycling for about 20 years. I had friends who tried to get me into cycling, but my first ride was the London to Brighton bike ride which I loved and was then hooked doing longer rides, and getting better bikes. I challenged myself to cycle Around the Bay, then going on cycling holidays in Europe and discovered it is the best way to travel and see a country. I have done several cycle trips in Europe and have cycled over the Himalayas with my Bob trailer to Everest Base Camp, which was an amazing experience.

I love cycling for the physical exercise, the fresh air and how it makes me feel, as I love getting outside. I always feel better after a bike ride, even if I suffer going up the hills at the time. It is a good social activity but you can also go on your own, and it is amazing the distances you can cover if you have time. You get a real sense of achievement.

My first peak was Mt Buffalo as part of the Alpine Classic. It was hard but it was a huge achievement. I then challenged myself to the other peaks. I always suffer on the hills and am very slow, but have learned to enjoy them and love the sense of achievement when I make it to the top. I always love the descents. It is fun doing it with other people as you are all facing the same challenges.

I try and get up to Bright with friends at least once a year to cycle the mountains and enjoy the regional wine, food and scenery. Life does not get much better than enjoying a well deserved wine at one of the local wineries after a good bike ride, looking out over the amazing countryside.
